Cybersmart: Helping Others

LI: To create a screencastify which helps others to find and navigate to a class blog.

The above screencastify is created by Liletina, Afatia, Lily and me under the topic of cybersmart. The reason we created this video is to guide the students or parents who are new to our school and do not know how to access something. We first chose the topic of our video which is to reach to a class blog. We first created our script on a piece of paper and then decided the dialogues each person will say. Once we were ready we created the screencastify from my chromebook. We made a couple of mistakes at first but we then got the confidence from trying it again and again. I liked that we could showcase our learning through a video and it could be helpful.

Natural Disaster: Earthquake 1

LI: To use smart searching skills and and create a google draw on an earthquake.

The above google draw showcases my learning on the topic of earthquake under the topic of Inquiry. It covers the meaning and example of an earthquake in Aotearoa, preventive measures and damage of an earthquake at the place as well as the important words or vocabulary. While completing this task I found something new about the earthquake proof buildings. The interesting fact is that instead of falling they have the ability to sway about 15 centimetres both ways and stay sturdy. I came to know a lot about earthquakes after completing this task.

Natural Disaster: Earthquake 2

LI: To create a poster that clearly tells you how to stay safe during a natural disaster.

The above google draw showcases my poster on the steps to follow while an earthquake which comes under the topic of Inquiry. I have included big pictures and less information because it would be helpful when the reader is in a hurry. It has the instructions that a person should follow when they are in a building, bed, open field, vehicle and wheelchair. I didn't know about the basic three rules which were drop, cover and hold in an earthquake before completing this task. I liked that we could use our creativity as our drawing to showcase our learning. I came to know a lot about the evacuation system if there is a natural disaster after completing this task.

Te Reo Challenges: Powhiri

LI: To create a presentation which tells others what a powhiri is.

The above google slide showcases my learning on the topic of powhiri as a part of the Te Reo Challenges. The topics I have covered are the meaning of wero, karanga, manuhiri, whaikorero, koha, hongi and kai. I tried to include more pictures as they have a significant role presenting the information. I found interesting that hongi is rubbing of noses and a way to great the visitors. Learning about hongi was something so knowledgeable as it is a very different and kind way to greet. I didn't know anything about powhiri and after completing this task and researching about the different rituals I came to know a lot.

Making Choices: Emergency Careers

LI: To choose a career that is required in an emergency by making wise choices.

The above google draw showcases my desired career which is required in an emergency. I chose to be a paramedic which is basically the doctor in an ambulance. In my previous career tasks I have said that I want to be a general practitioner which can be related to this career as well. Choosing this job is significant because whenever somebody in injured in an accident an action must take place as quick as possible. Therefore an ambulance is required to reach the destination on time, give temporary aids and then take them to the hospital because it could be a matter of life and death. Completing this task was very knowledgeable as I got a wider knowledge about different careers by making wise choices.

Distance Learning: Fitness Challenge

LI: To create your own fitness challenge so you can keep fit even in lockdown.

The above google slide showcases the fitness challenge that I created so that I can keep myself fit even through lockdown. Doing this task gave me as well as my brother the motivation to do exercise. To make it interesting I created this fitness challenge into a game. So first, you find the number written in the table for each of the letter in your name. Once you have written it you add them up and when you scroll through the slides you will find a schedule for yourself. It depends on your capacity I am a beginner so I just do as it says but if you are advance then you can increase the number. I also follow this schedule everyday. After completing this task I came to know the importance of your health and it completely depends on you if you want to maintain it or not.

Cybersmart: Using Images

LI: To understand that images should match to the information in text by allowing the reader to make a visual connection.

The above google slide is a collaborative work of Chris and me under the topic of Cybersmart. The reason for creating this google slide is to tell the importance of matching the image to the information. To make the topic clear we added two examples with the same text. The difference was that one is correct and one is incorrect. The main purpose was that the image has a main role when you are telling about a certain topic thus the image and the statistics must match. This task gave a very useful lesson and I also enjoyed to work as a team.

Reading: Research Biologist Charles Darwin

LI: To use smart searching skills to find out about a biologist from the past who made an important contribution to biology.

Today Afatia and I worked together to create a presentation on Charles Darwin who is a very famous biologist. To complete this task we first talked to each other through a video call so we could easily discuss our ideas. Once we had collected information about his journey, occupation, achievements and facts we added all of it into a google slide. In the end we created a slide showcasing the questions we used to guide our research. We found interesting that Charles Darwin wanted to be a doctor before he decided to be a biologist. We really enjoyed working together as we could talk to each other and share our ideas concerning this topic as well as got a chance to work as a team.

Reading: Research Physicist Albert Einstein

LI: To use smart searching skills to find out about a physicist from the past who made an important contribution to physics.

Today Fau and I worked together to create a presentation on Charles Darwin who is a very famous physicist. To complete this task we first talked to each other through a video call so we could easily discuss our ideas. Once we had collected information about his journey, occupation, achievements and facts we added all of it into a google slide. In the end we created a slide showcasing the questions we used to guide our research. We found interesting that Albert Einstein never used to comb his hair and didn't prefer to wear socks as he thought this something waste of time. We really enjoyed working together as we could talk to each other and share our ideas concerning this topic as well as got a chance to work as a team.

We really enjoyed working together as we could talk to each other and share our ideas concerning this topic as well as got a chance to work as a team.

Math: Weekly Challenges

LI: To practice using number and strategy knowledge.

The above google draw is made to showcase the screenshots I have taken while solving very interesting Math questions on Math Weekly Challenges . This was a site which was made by the government and provided for the students who currently study for year three to year eleven. I really liked these challenges for various reasons. The first one is that we could keep our learning going and also came to know about new strategies and formulas to solve higher level questions. The second one is that we got to choose which level are we comfortable on, I chose the senior but because of this quality many students enjoyed this. The third and the last one is that the cartoons and characters make the thing look very eye-catchy also attracting the student to complete all of them. Finishing all these weekly challenges was very useful and knowledgeable for me.

Reading: Meaning of Science

LI: To identify the main ideas in science.

The above google slide showcases our learning about the meaning behind science which is made by our reading group  also called as Pasteur. Our reading group includes Florence, Lily, Karlos, Akuhata, me and Haylee as our leader. Our presentation includes the meaning, categories, branches of science and the process of a science experiment. We started by searching for information through texts from google and videos from youtube. Once we collected the information we tried to add it in a creative way so it could look attractive. We also added some pictures and icons that we drew on a google draw. We really liked the fact that we got a chance to work together as a team and create this google slide.

Reading: Fair Test

LI: To explain what a fair test in science is.

The above google draw is made by Lily, Heavenly and me as we worked collaboratively to carry out a virtual experiment. We first made notes, asked questions to each other through the question dice and talked about the key or important words that occurred while conducting the experiment. Once we created the google draw we then constructed a script to explain the importance of fair testing. The reason we conducted this task was to complete a visual experiment and understand the meaning and importance of a fair test during an experiment. We came to know that a variable is when the amount keeps changing and a control is meant by a fix amount. We really enjoyed working together as we could convey our ideas and got a chance to work as a team.

Career Pathway: Qualifications

LI: To find out what qualification I would need to be a General Practitioner.

Today we have been looking back at careers and came to know about the qualifications that would be needed to be a General Practitioner. A career pathway is where you can write information or the steps you would need to follow and achieve your desired career. My preferred career is to be a General Practitioner and thus the subjects that would really be useful for me are the three branches of science which are Chemistry, Physics and Biology as well as English and Math. Including all the years for the degrees and education to be a General Practitioner I would have to study for eleven years. The chances of getting my career is high and the salary I would get is $250K per year. This task was very useful as I got an idea of the study which is very important for being a General Practitioner.

Reading: Main Ideas in Science

LI: To find our three most vital ideas to answer the question what is science.

This week for reading we learnt about what is science. To make it more easier we worked in a group called Pasteur which included Lily, Karlos, Akuhata, Florence, Tanisha, Hosea, me and Haylee as our leader. We watched videos including many interesting facts which were then written on sticky notes to showcase our main ideas. Once all of us had written our sticky notes we attached it to one of the papers with the heading Important Ideas. We then read all the sticky notes, further negotiated and discussed to move seven of them ahead which would be are Very Important Ideas from the Very Important Ideas. Finally, we chose three as our vital ideas. Using this strategy was very useful as we learnt how to negotiate and discuss within a team.

Reading: Summarizing Science

 LI: To summarize the information.

This week for reading we have been learning about what science is. We started off with writing down what we already knew about science on sticky notes, then we watched a video to find out more. While watching the video we used the sticky notes to make notes. The video explains the areas of science, the difference between basic science and applied science. One thing we found really interesting was that you use chemistry, physics, and biology when you make a lime juice from fresh limes.

We negotiated and shared ideas to create a summary, we used the sticky notes to create sentences for the summary. Our group worked collaboratively to get these activities completed. We enjoyed doing this activity as we were able to practice negotiating and taking time to respect everybody's ideas. We have summarized our learning below.

Science is about getting knowledge from asking questions . It is divided into 3 areas: Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Science is both basic and applied, basic science using what you know. Science is either beneficial or harmful depending on how you view and use it.

Questions we want to ask:
Where can science be used?
Why is science important to our world ?
When do scientists ask questions?

Inquiry: Hauora Challenge 4

LI: To create an information poster that explains the four walls of Hauora.

The above poster showcases the information on the four walls of Hauora under the topic of inquiry. The poster includes some pictures related to the rules of the wall to make it look attractive. I used the canva site to make the poster as it was very useful by giving me samples and pictures as well. Sakina helped me so I could make the poster because I didn't use this site earlier. As Hauora has four walls it has four classified rules and regulations. Taha Tinana which is the first wall is related to the healthy and fit body where as Taha Hinengaro being the second wall focuses on taking care of others and also having a healthy mind. Taha Whanau being the third wall tells of being part of a team and support the ones who you care where as Taha Wairua which is the forth wall features the religious beliefs and the confidence to accept challenges. Overall if all the walls are well balanced then a person has a healthy and happy life. Completing this task was very knowledgeable and fun as I could showcase my learning through a poster.
