Inquiry: Illusions

LI: To know more about illusions under the topic of light.

This week Mr. Johnston taught us about illusions as a part of our inquiry lesson. We first learned about the different parts in our eye and their roles which are the iris, eyelashes, eyelids and eyeball. Illusions are formed when an image is followed by an other image creating a confusion when seen by the lens. The above google draw showcases the game called the fish in the bowl which is based on illusions. I found interesting that an image when seen by our lens is reversed in the back of our eye but comes in its actual form when its transferred to the brain. This lesson with Mr. Johnston was very informative and I would love to learn more facts about light.

Inquiry: Light

LI: To make a google draw on the interesting facts of light.

This week we have been working with Mr. Johnston on the topic of light. We have learnt about reflection, refraction, shadows, rainbows, its speed and its types. I have created this google draw that includes the interesting facts about light. I found the interesting that light is the fastest travelling substance in the universe and travels at powerful speed of 300,000 kilometers per second. This is the reason why it takes just 499 seconds for the sunlight to come on earth despite having such a large distance. I found the topic of light very interesting and would love to learn more about such interesting topics.

Inquiry: Periscopes

LI: To make a google draw about our learning on periscopes.

This week we have been learning about light with Mr. Johnston as a part of our Inquiry lesson. For this particular activity, we learnt about periscopes. Mr. Johnston made his own periscope for LS2 so we could play as well as know how it works. A periscope is a tube that holds mirrors at the bottom and the top. You look through the bottom hole and you can see out above. I found the procedure of the periscope interesting as it works on the first rule of reflection which is angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidence.I added the meaning, procedure, usage and a picture of the periscope in my above google draw. I really enjoyed learning about light with a fun topic of periscopes.

Tech: Making a Star

LI: To do the coding for the mBot robots to make a star.

This week for our year 8 robotics session we went to Tamaki College and worked with Ms. Ferguson. Today we learnt how to make a star by coding with a mBot robot. We first drew a star on paper and then went outside and made a star on the ground so we have an idea of what the robot will do. Once this activity was completed we then did the coding so the robot would follow the command. Even though we couldn’t make a star but our robots made a lot of Spirograph when Ms. Ferguson attached a marker to it. I gained a lot of experience on coding with mBot robots after going to my Tech class with Ms. Ferguson.

Me, Liletina and Afatia first practiced this for a week and then when we were sure for making the video we went to the playground and used screencastify to make the video. This activity was quite tricky for us but we enjoyed a lot as we made some mistakes and then repeated it again. We all made several mistakes but we were very happy when we finally made our video. I would love to complete other Te Reo Challenges.

Gold Respect: Panmure Bridge School Brochure

LI: To make a brochure of Panmure Bridge School as a CARE Award Task.

The above google draw was made as my fifth task for my Gold CARE Award badge. Me and Florence added the main information about Panmure Bridge School in our brochure. There are many activities held in our school such as Flying Five, Library, Kapa Haka, Sports and Digital Learning. Panmure Bridge School is a place where every student gets a chance to learn from experienced and kind teachers for their better future. We also get awards for various categories which also keeps a competition for the students and give them confidence to achieve all the goals in life. I am looking forward to complete my other tasks for getting my Gold Respect badge.

Gold Respect: Thank you letter to teacher

LI: To create a thank you letter for a teacher or a staff member as a CARE Award Task.

The above google draw showcases the Thank you letter for Ms. Anderson as my fourth gold respect CARE Award Task. As this was a gold task I made some images in which hearts are coming out from the envelope and a cartoon image of Ms. Anderson and me. I always wanted to write a thank you letter to Ms. Anderson as she helped me with my studies and also makes me feel confident every time I am nervous. I have really enjoyed being a part of LS2 and being guided by Ms. Anderson. I am looking forward to complete my other tasks for my Gold Respect badge.

Art: Doodling with David

LI: To show our CARE Values by help building Confidence

Me including Lily, Afatia, Chris, Lukah and Ong got a special art session with David who is a student in LS2. He emailed Ms. Anderson the previous day and asked her the stationary we would need to do doodling. We made a shape and then filled it with waves and lines. The art looked very effective and I drew a heart with waves in it. To make it fancy I added headphones to the heart and wrote a quote " Enjoy your life and live with peace." We all really enjoyed to work with David. I think it was also one of our CARE Values as we helped him grow more confidence. I would love to help others to grow more confidence through fun activities.

Math: Calendar Challenge

LI: To find the most efficient strategy to find solve the problem.

This week me and Sulia combined and worked as a team to solve our second Math Challenge. The above google draw showcases the question, strategy, main information and the answer to solve this problem. We found this question easy as the values were written clearly and there wasn't any extra information to get confused. Once we understood the question Sulia told the strategy and I did the calculations. To find the answer we first take away the amount of money given to the photographer from each calendar as they both have the same units. We then multiply the amount of the calendars to the cost and then get our answer $759.90. I really enjoyed working as a team as we could discuss our strategies.

Math: Subway Challenge

LI: To find the most efficient strategy to solve the problem.

This week for our first Math Challenge me and Sulia worked together to solve the problem. The above google draw showcases the question, main information, strategy and the answer to solve this problem. We think this question was a little tricky as we got confused with the extra information. Once we understood the question Sulia told the strategy and I did the calculations. To find the answer we find the number of combos for the two different amounts and then multiply them with their amount. Once we get two different answers we add them and get our final answer which is $831. I enjoyed working as a team as we both could divide the work and also came to know about each others opinion.

Gold Respect: Stan Walker's song CLIMB

LI: To research the song CLIMB sung by Stan Walker

The above google draw was made as my third task for my Gold CARE Award badge. This was a combined task as I worked with Florence. We first heard the encouraging song sung by Stan Walker in the Australian Idol. When we heard the song we felt so motivated and I think the lyrics are made in such way that makes it so positive and peaceful when heard. The encouraging lyrics and the motivation in the lyrics make the song special and unique. I found interesting that this song was originally sung by Miley Cyrus and I didn't even know that Stan Walker was a New Zealander. I am looking forward to complete my other tasks for achieving my Gold Respect badge.

Physical Education: Volleyball

LI: To learn the two types of ways to serve in volleyball.

This week for our Physical Education session we learnt the two types of serves in volleyball. In the first serve we keep the ball in our left hand and then use our right hand with an open fist to aim and throw the ball on the opposite side. In the second serve we throw the ball in air with our left hand and then use our right hand to aim and throw it to the opposite side. Once everybody learned and practiced these in groups of four we got a chance to play as two opposite teams and had a rule that the person who missed the ball goes and sits thus the last person standing in the group is the winner. I really enjoyed to do my Physical Education class and also learned the two types of serving.

Tech: Infrared Sensor

LI: To use Infrared sensors in mBot robots to follow the track.

This week for our year 8 robotics session we went to Tamaki College and worked with Ms. Ferguson. The above picture showcases me coding the commands for the infrared sensor in the computer. We first learned about the difference between ultrasonic and infrared light. Ultrasonic light is the type of light which contains the blue shades of the seven colors in the white light where as infrared light is the type of light which contains the red shades of the seven colors in the rainbow. Then we learned about the binary numbers used as a method to add them in our codes. The two numbers help the mBot robot to differentiate between the black tracks and the white background. Once we got the correct codes and then uploaded to the robot we try it on the track. I was so very happy when it worked as it took an average of seven tries to get the correct code. I received a lot of help from Florence, Haylee and Ms. Ferguson. I gained a lot of information on the two different types of sensors in robots after going to my Tech class with Ms. Ferguson.

The above google draw was made by the collaborated work with Heavenly as a reading task on the Polynesian Panthers. We first discussed our text and thought to make a question based google draw. I really liked to work with Heavenly as I got a chance to divide the work and complete it with others thoughts. I found interesting that New Zealand faced such revolts and problems as I never knew any such thing. After completing this task I came to know about the revolts and injustice faced by the Pacific people and the leadership of the Polynesian Panthers. I would love to complete more tasks as a team.

Math: Blog Post Analysis

LI: To analyse our blog post data to help us set goals.

I used the statistical  information on my blog to help me set goals for 2020. Before I can publish a blog post I need to complete the task. I worked the average number of posts I made for each month and used the data to set a realistic and achievable blogging goal.

Reading: Evaluating the Polynesian Panthers

LI: To read the information in the text, think about what you have read and form an opinion.

The above google draw showcases our group discussion for our reading task on the topic of Polynesian Panthers. This week we first read the text "Rise up- The story of the dawn raids and the Polynesian Panthers". Evaluating the text really helped in getting the main purpose of the story and some important points. Our opinion for the Polynesian Panthers was that we really support them as everyone has the right to protest and express their feelings and revolt when their rights are humiliated and when they want justice and equality. I really liked to work as a team for completing this reading task on Polynesian Panthers.

Cityscape of Dubai

LI: To write a description of my cityscape using prepositions

In the middle of my cityscape of Dubai you will see the Burj Khalifa standing tall against the surrounding buildings. Very few people know that Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world and has a stunning height of 828m and has 160 floors. The building at the right of the image is a very famous and one of the most expensive hotels in the world known as the Burj Al Arab. The beautiful sailboat design of the prominent Burj Al Arab, makes it easy to recognize and separate it from others. The most astonishing fact of the Burj Al Arab is that most of the interior in this seven star hotel is made of 24K gold. There are a huge number of tall and different buildings in this city which makes it unique in this huge wide world. It might sound surprising but it is true that Dubai was once a desert and now is a huge city and also has a snow planet inside one of the shopping malls!

The background of the cityscape is made by blending cool colors like purple, pink and blue with the help of chalk pastels. To make the sky look dark I blended the color with black whereas to make the sky look light blue I blended the color with white. The top of the sky has a dark shade of purple going light and mixing with blue which completes my scenery as the beautiful evening sky.

Hydra Math Challenge

LI: To use exponents and solve the question with an efficient strategy

The above DLO showcases the google draw of the collaborated work with Fau and Sulia for the Hydra Math Challenge. Exponents are numbers with a base and a power. The power tells the number of times we have to multiply the base. To solve the question we had to keep the base as the number of heads grown and the power as the number of days. I also came to know that working in a team is always the best as we can discuss our strategy and divide the work.
