Te Reo Challenges: Kowhaiwhai Patterns

LI: To design a Kowhaiwhai pattern for our PBS Te Reo blog.

Kowhaiwhai patterns art from the Maori culture which tell a story through the drawings. Kowhaiwhai patterns are used in the Wharenui, a place where the traditional meetings and sleepovers take place. My Kowhaiwhai pattern means the combining of the superior water power and the powerful life power. The green structure depicts the life through greenery where as the blue structure depicts the beautiful water. After a lot of destruction to human life these two superior powers are combining to begin human life again.

  1. Wow Sakshi. I'm blown away by the meaning behind your design. I especially like how you used colours to depict the greenery and water. Nature is important to Maori people so I like how you combined those powers with human life through your design. Where did you get your idea from?

    1. Good afternoon Ms. Pryde,
I am glad you liked my Kowhaiwhai pattern. Thank you so much for the amazing feedback. I have seen many designs from the internet. Then I combined some of them and thought of this meaning. This was how I created this Kowhaiwhai pattern. Thank you so much for commenting on my blog.
