SLJ (W3/A23): Kick Start Tastes of Summer

LI: To create a collage of foods that you love to eat in summer.

The above google draw is the third Kick Start activity for this week of the Summer Learning Journey that I have completed today. I started by thinking about all the foods that I enjoyed eating and would love to it in summer. Then, I collected pictures that were labelled for reuse and added them on a google draw. I also made sure that I have added the links to them. Before doing this activity I watched the introduction screencastify and read how to be a drawing ninja which was very helpful because I tried to become creative and it gave me new ideas as well. To make my collage stand out, I have used the color theme of Summer and have added pictures the way I have seen in magazines. Some adjective to describe my food would be refreshing, flavourful and chewy. I liked completing this task because it made me think of many pleasant and beautiful memories of summer. I am looking forward to complete the other part of this activity as well.

  1. Hello again Sakshi, it's Elle here from SLJ.

Great work on your tastes of summer collage. First of all, well done for crediting the original photographers in your post - this is very important, so thank you for including this!

You have chosen some awesome foods that make me very hungry! Especially sushi because it is one of my favourite foods! What is your go-to flavour for sushi? I think mine is salmon, avocado and sesame seeds! Very refreshing.

Ka pai - your design work is awesome! I really like that you’ve put so much effort into the colours and the font to match the summery feel of the foods you chose. I see that you’ve included the adjectives you would use to describe them - which adjectives would match which foods?

Great blogging Sakshi and keep it up! Also, happy new year!

    Ngā mihi,
    Elle (SLJ)

    1. Hi Elle,

Thank you for taking time and commenting on my Summer Learning Journey blog post. I am glad to talk to you again and to know that you liked my work! I agree, attributing the images are really important as the photographers deserve their work to be displayed by their name.

Sushi is my favourite as well! I am a vegetarian so I can't eat meat, thus I only eat avocado sushi. The fun fact is that I never really liked sushi from the start because it wasn't common in my country. Once I came here, I made it myself in our Tech class and I just loved it! Since then I am a die heart fan of sushi. Your go-to flavour for sushi sounds amazing! What are the five dishes that come in your mind when you think about summer?

The adjectives for the food would be as follow:
      1. Sushi- flavorful (taste)
      2. Mac & Cheese- chewy (taste)
      3. Fruit Salad- juicy (taste)
      4. Chocolate Ice Cream- fusible (texture)
      5. Milkshake- smooth (texture)
      6. Lemonade- refreshing (taste)

      Thank you so much!
I am looking forward for your reply.

    2. Kia ora Sakshi, you are most welcome and it is always wonderful to hear back from you.

I’m so glad to hear that you agree about the importance of attributing other’s work! It’s awesome that you’ve taken such care in doing so.

Avocado sushi is just as good, if not better! And much better for the environment, it’s great to hear that you’re a vegetarian! I’m glad that you’re a fellow fan of avocado sushi, and it’s so interesting to hear that you didn’t like it before, but you love it so much now. I first ate sushi when I was 13, because my Mum visited Japan for a month on a teaching exchange and we made it together when she came home! I think making and eating your own sushi is so much fun.

That is a great question! I would have to say my five summer foods that come to mind (that are different to what you chose, because I agree with all of them) are cheese pizza, corn-on-the-cob, jacket potatoes, fresh fruit ice cream and banoffee pie! Yum, I’m really hungry now…

Those are some great adjectives for great food, thank you for sharing Sakshi!

    3. Kia ora Elle,

Thank you for taking time and replying to my comment as well as for answering the question. That is great! I thought I was the only one who was in love with sushi a little late. My friends loved sushi since they were small and I thought I really missed something important out. Wow, it is so great to know that your mother has been to Japan! I have always wanted to visit that country.

Your food choices are amazing! Talking about food makes me feel hungry as well. Summer foods vary in different countries according to different tastes. Do you know some iconic dishes that are popular in the foreign and are eaten in summer? A dish that comes in my mind right now is Cold Spicy Kimchi Noodles which is called "Kimchi Guksu" in korean. I have tried these in a restaurant and they taste amazing. The interesting part was that they were completely different from the noodles served here, as it had a strong garlic taste in it.

It was so nice talking to you!
      Looking forward for your reply.

    4. Mōrena Sakshi!

You are most welcome, thank you for your thoughtful and insightful replies!

I thought I was the only one as well! My friends always talked about sushi when I was younger, but because I lived in a small town/village, I didn’t have the opportunity to try it until we made it ourselves. I want to visit Japan too! Especially because my Mum had some incredible stories about the rich culture she experienced there! I found it really interesting how urban and technologically advanced Tokyo and Osaka are, yet the smaller cities like Fukuoka and Kyoto were so beautiful for sight-seeing and experiencing the traditional culture. I really want to visit the Cherry Blossom parks there - the pictures I’ve seen are breath-taking! What would you want to experience the most if you travelled to Japan?

Kimchi Guksu sounds delicious! Korean is one of my favourite cuisines! One popular summer food I have tried from a foreign country is Gazpacho, which is very popular in Spain. It is a cold soup made up of blended vegetables that is very refreshing! I think it is interesting to see other countries put a spin on traditional cuisine from other regions, for example, there is an Italian-style gazpacho that is altered with iconic italian seasonings like basil and oregano!

It was so nice talking to you too! I really enjoy reading your thoughts and experiences in the comments!
