SLJ (W4/A32): Step it up Ice Cream

LI: To use scratch and create an animation showcasing the vocabulary I learnt.

The above poster is the fourth task for this week of the Summer Learning Journey that I have completed today. The Step it up activity showcases the animation I have created on scratch. This was the first time I  uses this site and I was excited from the start because students in my class often used it. I started by watching the introduction videos and I think they were a great help for a beginner like me. I still was not sure about other features and tools so I ended up making a basic animation. I added different costumes to the character as the first one is the cashier and the second one is the customer. I have also added a conversation between them which is the vocabulary I learnt from completing the previous task. I loved completing this task as I got a chance to share my knowledge in the form of a fun animation with the readers and I am looking forward to do other tasks for the Summer Learning Journey as well.

  1. Hello again Sakshi, this is Elle from SLJ.

Well done for stepping it up and creating an animation! You have shared yet another great blog post practicing te reo Māori!

I really like that you’ve put so much effort into giving your character costumes and accessories, and it’s so cool to see all of the questions and phrases that you learned!

It looks like you had a lot of fun with this step it up challenge and got to learn about animating as well as expanding your vocabulary, which is great to see! It’s always awesome when you can learn two skills at once! Do you think you will keep practicing?

Ngā mihi nui and ka pai Sakshi!

    1. Hi Elle,

Thank you for taking time and commenting on my blog as well as for the positive feedback. It's nice to talk to you again and I am glad that you liked my work. I agree, completing this task was very knowledgeable for me for many reasons and three of them were:

      1. Knowing about Scratch because I really wanted to tr it out once as I already knew about it earlier.
      2. Improving my vocabulary because these step it up activities always make me learn something new in Te Reo Maori
      3. Sharing my work because I get a chance to explain my learning with a detailed blurb to my readers and have rich learning conversations.

After completing this activity I have been making many animations on scratch and I have also learnt new features like adding a background and moving the characters. Have you ever used scratch before? If yes, do you know some features that would be useful for me? If no, would you like to try it once and why?

      Thank you for the comment!
I would love to talk to you again.

    2. Mōrena Sakshi! It made me smile this morning when I checked my emails and saw that I had lots of replies from you!

Those are three very great reflections of your learning - tino pai tō mahi e hoa! That’s so great that you were intrigued about using scratch and that this activity gave you the ability to try it out! It makes me so happy to hear that you enjoyed developing your knowledge of te reo Māori, and that you like having a rich learning conversation with your readers too - this is so important and a great part about educational blogging!

Well done for continuing to practice on Scratch and learning more about the capabilities of the programme! I tried using Scratch once about 9 years ago, because it was part of my orientation for high school. Unfortunately, back then, I was not very skilled with computers and I found it very hard to use! I did not have the determination that you have to persevere through the struggle I had, so I have not used it since, and actually forgot that it existed until this activity. I definitely will have to try again now that I’m more familiar with technology. Thank you for inspiring me to give it another go!

Keep up the fantastic blogging Sakshi, it has been wonderful to see the amount of effort and care you’ve put into the Summer Learning Journey activities!

      Ngā mihi,
      Elle (SLJ)
