SLJ (W2/A15): Kick Start Maui me te ra

LI: To create a presentation that showcases the phrase I created on "How Maui slowed the Sun".

The above presentation showcases the phrase that I have created in my own words with the title "How Maui slowed the sun" or "Maui me te ra".  For this activity we were challenged to write a phrase on the perspective of one character in the decided story. The phrase that I have created doesn't really have a rhyme and just expresses what the I was saying in sentences. I chose to write this kind of phrase because when I tried to rhyme the poem in english it didn't rhyme in Te Reo Maori and the same when other way around. As I am not that good in Maori I used the internet to help me to form sentences. This is a story that shows the perspective of Maui and what he did and thought through out the story. A short summary of the story is that Maui and his four brothers decide to save their land from the sun by reducing its power as it has been moving fast resulting the night to be long. They have prepared themselves by making ropes and decided to go to the cave from where the sun rose. In the end, Maui uses the stone he received from his ancestors to defeat the sun and make the days longer than the night. I am looking forward to complete the second part of this activity as well.

Your efforts continue to blow me away! This is a superb slide show showcasing the story of Māui me te Rā. I really appreciated also how you have accredited the sources for the pictures that you have used, tino pai tēnā!

Regarding the last picture you used, consider being mindful of the content involved. To me, the last image shows people from somewhere in Africa. I understand where you were coming from, wanting to find an image of people living in a non-european context but we should be mindful of not lumping together such different cultures and peoples.

Keep up the great work as always Sakshi!

    Mā te wā,

    Benjamin

    1. Morena Benjamin,

Thank you for commenting on my blog and the positive feedback. Thank you for the advise as well! I have made the changes now. I agree, the images should match to content as it is very important and I will make sure that I do not repeat the mistake I made, again. Thank you for pointing it out and giving me a positive advise. I really appreciate it! Have you heard of this story before? Do you know any other story in which Maui has saved the world?

      Thank you so much!

    2. Mōrena Sakshi,

I hope you had a nice Christmas, and enjoyed time with family!

I’m super glad you understand the value of appropriate content, and it will only enhance your own thinking and analysing.

Māui stories are widely acknowledged in Māori, and also other polynesian islands around Aotearoa. Even Hawaii has their own version of Māui!

Yes they used to tell these stories when I was at primary school also. I love understanding Aotearoa through Māori myths and legends.

From what I see there are many Māori myths and stories that Māui is in. Such as, Māui and the giant fish and How Māui brought fire to the world . You should have a read, they’re beautiful stories!

      Mā te wā,

      Benjamin.

    3. Mōrena Benjamin,

Thank you for taking time and replying to my comment as well as answering my question. I enjoyed spending time with my family on Christmas, I hope you had a great time as well. I agree and think that it was very important and beneficial for me to learn the importance of appropriate content. Wow! I used to think that Maui was a character who was just used in stories of Aotearoa only. I also love learning more about this culture through stories and legends! Thank you for recommending these stories, they were great! Did you know that these stories can be called pourquoi stories as they prove a fact in a fictional way? If you were asked to create one what would be the topic? Can you give a short summary for your story as well.

      Thank you so much!

    4. Kia ora anō Sakshi,

No worries. Yes I did know that, great observation. A reason why these stories are always and forever interesting.

I would probably base it around the sea, and maybe the idea would be surrounded around climate change and water levels rising.

Thanks for your insightful questions, I look forward to conversing over your next few activities.

      Have a nice day Sakshi.

      Mā te wā,
      Benjamin.

    5. Kia ora Benjamin,

Thank you for taking time and replying to my comment as well as for answering my question. I am glad, you knew that they are called pourquoi stories. That's an amazing idea! I agree they would be perfect because New Zealand can e called an island which is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. Again, thank you for creating this comment thread in which I could learn more, share ideas and also ask questions. I am looking forward to talk to you in other comments as well.

Hope you have a nice day as well!

    1. Kia ora Afatia,

Thank you for commenting on my blog and for the positive feedback as well. I am glad you liked my work! I agree, the main reason of adding pictures in the story was to create a picture in the reader's mind. It's great to know that it is actually working. I think Maui is the perfect fictional character for these type of stories because he always has a positive attitude, leadership skills and ends up saving the people on his land. Do you know any other fictional character in the pacific stories? Why do you like them?

I am looking forward to talk to you in the comments!
