SLJ (W1/A4): Insect Art

LI: To create a piece of insect art

The above picture showcases my insect art as my fourth Summer Learning Journey Task. We started by watching a video which showed the art creations of a famous Japanese artist, Raku Inoue. It was very helpful as we could get some ideas as well as learn different techniques which were very efficient while making the actual art. We then went outside and collected leaves, twigs, and other plant debris to create our insect art. I used the leaf as paper and cut them into the shape of wings. I then used the twig as the body and the sticks as the antenna.

While doing this activity, I also came to know some interesting facts about butterflies. Butterflies and moths are part of the same group of insects but have a major difference as butterflies fly in bright sunshine, where as a moth is mostly active at night. Many people think that a butterfly has two wings but they actually have four wings on either side of the body. When the butterfly's stay still they are warming themselves in the sun so that they can fly easily. I found this activity very fascinating as I could learn how to be more creative but at the same time I also learnt more facts about a butterfly.

Your butterfly looks absolutely great! Its good to see that you have used different objects for your butterfly! (Leaves, flowers, sticks etc). Relating to your fact saying why butterflies stay still really blew my mind away! I never knew that that was the reason, your questions are very interesting. I have also done this activity and just coincidentally I have done a butterfly as well! I also enjoyed this activity.

Out of the 3 facts you have stated, are there any facts that you didn't know before doing this activity? or did you know all of them?

Keep up the great work throughout the Summer Learning Journey!

Thank you so much for commenting on my blog and the positive feedback. I really appreciate it. I agree, I myself didn't know these facts before doing this task. Before doing the activity I knew that a butterfly has four wings rather than two because I studied about it and I also knew that a moth and a butterfly come under the same species but have one major difference. I think the last fact was the most amusing one! Do you know any other interesting fact about a butterfly except the ones listed above? I am looking forward to see your blog and your design.

      Thank you!

  2. Kia ora Sakshi,

My name is Fiona and I’m from the Summer Learning Journey.

What a beautiful butterfly you have created out of natural materials. I really enjoyed reading your post about butterfly facts. I want to say thank you as reading your blog has taught me many new facts about these beautiful creatures that I did not know before!

I am Italian and in Italian the word for butterfly is farfalla - I think it is a very beautiful word. Do you know the word for butterfly in any other languages?

Keep up the great blogging - I can’t wait to see more of your amazing posts.

    Ciao!
    Fiona (SLJ).

    1. Kia ora Fiona,

Thank you for commenting on my blog and the positive feedback. Wow! I didn't know that a butterfly is called "farfalla" in Italian! I am an Indian and I have learnt many other languages as well. If I am not wrong a butterfly is called "titli" in Hindi, "farasha" in Arabic and "purerehua" in maori. Do you know any other interesting facts about a butterfly?

      Thank you!

  3. Hi Sakshi!
I really enjoyed reading your blog post about your insect art. I also did this activty and I enjoyed doing it. I also created a butterfly, but my butterfly has pink petals in the middle as the body. I love how you actually cut out the wings to make it look more real and detailed. What was the hardest part about this activity?

    1. Hi Florence,

Thank you so much for taking time and commenting on my blog again. I am glad you liked my work and thank you so much for the positive feedback. I really appreciate it! Wow! your design sounds amazing I am looking forward to see your task as well. I think the hardest part in this activity was to find the exact material I wanted because I still wanted some stuff that I couldn't get like different coloured and shaped leaves but still I am very happy that my design looks good. If you were asked to make another design what would you make and what new materials would you like to use?

Thank you for commenting on my blog.
