SLJ (W3/A20): Super Column with Nanogirl
LI: To create a screencastify showcasing the super column I created.
Today, I have completed my first task of week three for Summer Learning Journey activity and have created a screencastify that shows the super column I created with some paper and cardboard. First, I watched the introduction video Nanogirl has uploaded on her site and I came to know many new things. I started by learning the parts of a super column in more detail. It consists of a floor, roof and wall. The floor and roof creates a base and helps carry the weights whereas the wall or pillars have the main role of making it stand. Basically, we have created this activity to showcase a rough model of a building and find the best shape for the pillar to stand.
I started by collecting all the equipments that were required to run the activity which were, two circular shaped pillars, two triangle shaped pillars, a piece of paper, tape, weights and two same sized cardboard. Then I started by making the flat pillared column, in which I attached the piece of paper with the help of tape, on the cardboard. Later I added the weights but the column couldn't hold even one, as it collapsed. I did the same thing with the triangular and circular shaped pillars but both had different outcomes. The triangle shaped ones could hold three weights whereas the circular shaped ones could hold all four weights. In conclusion, I came to know that circle shaped pillars are the most effective ones out of all as it had the highest durability.
I really enjoyed doing this activity because I came to know more about the structure of building as well as got a cool way for finding the reason behind the shape of pillars. The part which I enjoyed the most was creating the structure because it kept me busy for a long time. The tricky part in this activity was clicking the picture because many times the structure collapsed and I needed to make it again. I think the advice I would give to the creators who haven't done the experiment yet, is to have another person with you so that they can click the picture of the structure at the right time. I am excited to complete other Summer Learning Journey activities as well.

The above picture is my step it up as the eighteenth activity for the Summer Learning Journey. For this task we were asked to share the game me and my family enjoy playing at Christmas. The game my cousins and I played is called "Draw it". This game requires three or more people to have fun as it is said "more the people more the fun". To play this game some equipments that would be required are whiteboard and markers or paper and pen, per person. The game consists of a creator, guessor and the remaining players as the artists. The creator whispers something in the artists ear and that is what they draw. If there are more players they keep on guessing, and draw what they think it is, passing it on. Finally it is the guessers turn to write the answer down and show it to the creator. In the start me and my cousins played the game but by the end I played it with my uncles, aunts and parents as well. It was really fun playing with more people as we laughed at each others drawings and guesses. The thing I liked the most was that we all had a great time and I am looking forward to complete other tasks as well.

SLJ (W2/A17) Step it up Te Huarere
LI: To create a screencastify with a family member to improve my maori pronunciation.
The above screencastify is my step it up task as the seventeenth activity for the Summer Learning Journey. For making this screencastify I asked my younger brother for help, so that he can ask questions and I answer them in Te Reo Maori. I think this task was very helpful to improve my maori skills because I solved the questions first and then said them while making the video. After completing this activity I learnt the use of macron in other words as well. A macron is a symbol which shows that the letter is a long vowel and must be read in a stretch. For example, in the word kāpuapua I will read "kā" at a stretch and read the rest of the words normally. I think these task was very knowledgeable for me because I learn something new every time. I am very excited to complete other Summer Learning Journey tasks as well.

The above presentation showcases the answers for the questions assigned on our seventeenth Kick Start Summer Learning Journey Task. I started by watching the introduction video which was very helpful as I came to know what to do for this task. Then, I learnt the meaning and pronunciation of each new vocabulary I am learning. For this activity I challenged myself by rearranging and making sentences. After completing the questionnaire I came to know that Huarere means weather, paki means sunny, pūāhuru means hot, kāpuapua means cloudy, hāuaua means rainy and tohu huarere means weather forecast. I found this activity really interesting as we used our smart searching skills to learn the meaning and increase our vocabulary in Te Reo Maori. I really liked completing this task and I am looking forward to complete the other part of this activity as well.

The above presentation is the Kick Start and fourteenth activity for the Summer Learning Journey. We were challenged to create our own poem which expressed how Christmas is celebrated our country. I started by watching a video "Kiwi Christmas Story" for getting some ideas and it was really very helpful. Then, I also explored NZ Christmas traditions so that I can learn and know what I can write in my lyrics. When I was writing my poem I made sure that I was including things that were unique in our country like the weather, people, places, events and objects. I loved doing this task because I came to know more about New Zealand by doing the research as well as I got a chance to express what I feel and do, through the lyrics. I think this challenge will also tell people around the world that Christmas is not just about winters and is about summers as well. I loved doing this task and am looking forward to complete other Summer Learning Journey Tasks as well.

Today, for my ninth Summer Learning Journey Task, I completed the above presentation. These question can also be called as the "odd one out" because we first saw all the pictures and guessed which picture is different from the other and doesn't belong. But there was a twist, we could choose more than one reason and could also choose various pictures with their individual reasons. We solved eight such activities and in the end we created a questionnaire that our reader could solve and answer in the comments. I think that was the best part because I could use my opinions and could form questions of my choice. This task was one of favourites through out the Journey and I am looking forward to solve other tasks as well.

The above picture showcases my insect art as my fourth Summer Learning Journey Task. We started by watching a video which showed the art creations of a famous Japanese artist, Raku Inoue. It was very helpful as we could get some ideas as well as learn different techniques which were very efficient while making the actual art. We then went outside and collected leaves, twigs, and other plant debris to create our insect art. I used the leaf as paper and cut them into the shape of wings. I then used the twig as the body and the sticks as the antenna.

Today we learnt about leaving a quality blog comment on another student’s blog which helps us make connections to new learning by asking open ended questions that encourage a reply and motivate the blogger to ask their own question in return. This is how a comment thread starts and when that happens we make connections with a wider audience who we can learn with and from. This is also very helpful and knowledgeable as we share each other opinions and come to know both sides of view. A quality comment includes a positive feedback, compliment, advise and question. To complete this activity I commented on Fau, Chris, Lukah, Afatia, Florence, Sakina, Victoria and Haylee's blog. I really liked completing this task and am looking forward to comment on other blogs as well.

Digital Board Game
LI: To create a digital board game for the juniors.
The above google draw showcases my designed digital board game with a Christmas theme to play with junior students. To play the game we first need to read the instructions really well and then use our counting skills to move the counter. The back story of this game is that Santa has to deliver all the presents to the houses but the Grinch has added some bombs on the way. If the counter lands on the bomb it has to go two steps behind but if it lands on the house it goes two steps forward. The ladders are like the bonus points which brings you from the bottom to the top of the board. Once we played the game with the year 4 students we taught them how to create their own game. It was really fun to work with them because they were very curious and excited to play their game with us.

Decorating the tree

Today we completed our design and went to the office to decorate the school Christmas tree. The purpose for our Design Technology Challenge was to create a set of our Holiday decorations that represented our school and the people in it. We were given a design brief and a delivery date by Mr. Johnston that included the specifications for our design. To celebrate the end of this challenge LS2 delivered their completed decorations to Mr. Johnston, then hung them on our school office tree. The Christmas tree looked very attractive when all the designs representing different cultures of our school were stood together. I really liked completing this challenge and the beautiful outcome.

Design Technology Challenge

The above picture showcases my product or outcome of the design technology challenge. We started by asking the specifications of the product from our client, Mr. Johnston which were to have a 10 cm size, 3D effects and make a design depicting your culture. Then we started researching on what we can make, through tasks like mood board and brainstorm. That is when I decided to make an elephant and a lantern which depicts my culture. We then started by preparing for our design by making a rough sketch from all angles and the materials we will need to complete it. To do effective sewing we first practiced on a piece cloth and learnt running and blanket stitching which were used for the borders and adding a new layer of felt. I also changed a few things from our actual plan as I decided to add embellishments to make it more eye-catchy and more beautiful. Once my design was completed, I was very pleased because I didn't think it would look this good.

I have also explained how bullying can be stopped by following some basic steps which includes stopping, seeking help, spreading awareness and helping the bullied person. Tech Reflection: Avocado Sushi

This week for our year 8 technology session we went to Tamaki College with Ms. Heka. The above picture showcases the dish we created. First we listened the instructions that Ms. Heka told us about the proportion of ingredients and cleaning the area where we worked. Our ingredients were Seaweed paper, boiled rice, avocado, and soya sauce. We first carefully added a thick layer of rice on the seaweed which was over the bamboo roll. Then we added small slices of avocado in the centre and started to roll it gently. We then cut it into small pieces and eat it with soya sauce. It tasted so delicious and we were very happy that our hard work had a good result. I liked working with Ms. Heka and I will miss her a lot because this was our last tech class.

An art can be described by its elements, which means that every piece of art includes lines, shapes, form, space, colors, value and texture. An art can only be created when a person covers all the elements mentioned above, in the right technique therefore when all these features are included in a piece of art it makes it more descriptive. All the elements connect to each other and can be called incomplete if excluded or used in the wrong way.
An artwork starts with a line, which is a stroke or a continuous mark made on a surface. A line can either be straight or curved, bold or thin. When two or more lines are combined it forms a shape which is our second element. Shapes are of various types, on one hand it can be geometric, including circles, squares but on the other hand it can be natural, including an undefined structure of a monument or sculpture. When a shape is created with a three dimensional formation it creates a form. It means taking up space like sculptures, but it can also be an illusion as a drawing. Space is another element of art, which means the area taken by the object, in other words it can be called volume.
Color being the most demonstrative element in art can often depict space by filling the area. The primary or main colors include red, blue and yellow whereas the secondary colors include purple, green and brown. The primary colors are merged to form secondary colors making the artwork more radiant. Value resembles the darkness and brightness of colors which can be done by adding black and white respectively. A dark and bright value creates contrast, showcasing the difference and similarities. Adding two or more values forms a texture, which describes how the surface feels. It can either be rough or smooth, wet or dry, hard or soft.
Every piece of art created in this world includes all the seven elements making it more aesthetic. The artwork that I recreated also has the seven elements and it showcases ancient Egypt. The dull colors, descriptive shapes, color combinations and the layered texture explains everything. In conclusion, every piece of art is made by combining all the features, making it incomplete if one of the elements are left.

The above google maps is a collaborative work of Ong and me under the topic of reading. We identified the purpose or reason of the author writing the article which were to persuade, inform or entertain. Each day, newspaper editors around the world must make decisions about which stories they will run. We explored the different types of current events that are happening around the world as well as plotted the location on google maps. It covered topics like timeliness, relevance, magnitude, unexpectedness, impact, somebody important, oddity, conflict, something negative, continuity, emotions and progress. I came to know a lot after completing this activity and enjoyed learning about the things that are happening in the world.

Te Whanau Raukura Performance
This week we were shown a performance that explained the meaning behind elements of the maori culture. They showed us the different ways they used to fight their enemies which included distraction, self defense, counter, scaring and intimidating them. They used many ornaments called the Taiaha, Poi and Te Rekau which made it more attractive. The Te Whanau Raukura were very experienced and energetic, and have also performed in the Auckland Museum. I found their facial expressions and body movements very amazing as they were very confident and it seemed quite hard. Once the performance finished Bekah came to our class and taught us a game called "Pokhana" which was a lot of fun. The rules were very easy, when we started the game we needed to face the person in the side of us and shout Pokhana and if they didn't respond or got confused they are out and sit in the centre. I really enjoyed playing this game and learning more about the maori culture.

Tech Reflection: Sausage Rolls

This week for our year 8 technology session we went to Tamaki College and worked wit Ms. Heka. The above picture showcases the dish we created. First we listened the instructions that Ms. Heka told us about the proportions of ingredients and cleaning the area where we cooked. Our ingredients were veg sausage, apple, sweet and sour chutney, pastry sheet and spring onion. We first made our filling which was grated apple and veg sausage, then we added our filling on the pastry sheet and carefully rolled it. We then cut it into eight equal pieces and applied it on the tray which was ready to go in the oven. It tasted so delicious and we were very happy that our hard work had a good result. I enjoyed working with Ms. Heka and attending this week's tech class.

Te Reo Challenge: Body Parts
LI: To create an animation showcasing the different body parts in maori.
The above animation is this weeks Te Reo Challenge which is set by Ms. Pryde. First we started by using animating sites like Powtoon and Pixton to start with the work. We chose an avatar so it would be easy to explain the topic. The animation covers body parts like mouth, legs, feet, eyes, teeth, elbow. nose, fingers, toes, hair, head, ears, shoulders, knee and hands with a line explaining its role in the body. By doing such activities I think I am increasing and developing my maori vocabulary which I think is very important. I come to know many new topics every time I complete a Te Reo Challenge and this time I have learned about the body. I would love to complete many such challenges.

The above google draw is a collaborative work of Afatia and me which showcases our learning on Highest Common Factor (HCF) under the topic of math. We first started by solving basic question and follow up worksheets to understand the topic step by step. Then we started to make this google draw. To explain the task in detail we have added the meaning, strategy, example and an image of the workout. I found this topic very interesting because we never knew about such a strategy and to solve these questions. I really liked working with Afatia and would love to do more tasks like this.

Why is it important to make wise choices?
Making wise choices is about choosing between the two paths, one leads to success and the other leads to failure. At every moment in life you have to make choices, it depends on you if you want to follow the crowd or stand out to follow your thoughts. Always keep in mind that you are the most important person in your world, nobody else.
With this topic in mind an example that can explain it well is drugs. It is a substance that is highly addictive and can also ruin your life. Drugs are often taken due to peer pressure and depression. If you are in one of these situations, on one hand you have the option to talk to your caregivers or seek help in a positive way but, on the other hand you can take drugs and find happiness in it. This is an example that can happen to anybody in everyday life and it is important to look back and make sure you do what is right for you.
In this situation if you choose the right path you can overcome your problem. The people around you will also understand your problem and will make sure that you feel fine after some time, but if you choose the wrong path by taking drugs you do not overcome your problem, it just fades for a time. Once you are conscious you will find the problem coming back with a bigger mess which is the addiction to drugs. It is always in your hand and thus it is said to make a decision after thinking more than once.
As drugs can be very addictive and dangerous it is better to stay away from them and do what you think is right. In conclusion, I think it is important to know that you have the situation in your hands and you can either open it to loose control or tighten it to rule over. To wrap it up, I would say that situations like drugs are just an example, and you might deal with something that is even worse just make sure that you make wise choices and think about yourself before making the decision.
The above paragraph was made on the importance of making wise choices under the topic Writing. First we set a timer for five minutes and wrote our ideas on a piece of paper so it could help us when we are writing our paragraph. Then we wrote our essay and used the DRAFT method to make further changes. This acronym stand for Delete, Rearrange, Add, Fix and Talk. It was very helpful as we followed the steps by deleting the words, rearranging the sentences, adding new words, fixing our essay and talking to our friend for learning new ideas. I really enjoyed improving my writing skills and working with Fau.
